Kickstart – Emergency Response Assistant

Location: Remote working (home-based)

Hours: 25 hours, 24 weeks

Salary: £8.91 per hour

Purpose of the role
Kickstart roles provide an opportunity to get paid work experience within the charitable sector. The training, development and experience in this role will improve your ability to apply for future entry level roles at the British Red Cross.

Reporting to the Emergency Response Operations Manager, the post holder will work as part of the area’s emergency response team and work on a variety of different projects including supporting with tactical cell referrals received through the National Support Line, cash-based assistance, and other tasks to support the team in responding to emergencies across the local area.

 

Local teams across the UK have been responding in a variety of different ways throughout the pandemic, and recently have become involved in the vaccination process. This role will involve working within a local team supporting the COVID-19 response. This may involve helping to coordinate vaccination or testing support. The post-holder may also support deployments, manage/update data systems or coordinate volunteer rotas.

 

Main responsibilities
Day-to-day

  • Support the Emergency Response Officer (ERO) to organise volunteer’s shifts, and coordinate volunteers
  • Provide support and assisting in responding to local emergencies
  • Assist the ERO in meetings with colleagues and partner organisations
  • Help to progress and implement projects locally.

National Support Line

  • Receive complex incoming requests from the National Support Line
  • Share information with people that need it and helping to respond to their requests

 

COVID-19 Activity and Emergency Response support

  • Support the local team to manage requests for support relating to Covid-19, for example coordinating volunteers for testing
  • Support the team during a spontaneous emergency, helping the Emergency Response Officer (ERO) to manage Emergency Response Volunteers and record keeping.

 

Support to BRC

  • To build good working relationships with colleagues in other teams and assist colleagues in your team with relevant tasks
  • Uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Work in pursuit of the Society’s vision, mission, and objectives and to work within the Society’s equal opportunities framework

Training and development
British Red Cross induction and mandatory training for all employees
First Aid at Work
Career development workshop and support with job searching and job application writing
Mentor support (1 hour per week for 24 weeks). Your mentor will help you with personal goal setting to make the most of your experience

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience of managing own work or study and of teamwork

  • Admin experience would be an advantage

 

Knowledge/ Technical Skills

  • Able to use the Microsoft Suite and willing to learn other systems

  • Familiar with databases or willing to undertake training

 

Competencies

  • Motivated, enthusiastic, and well organised

  • A good communicator in person, on the phone and using emails. Able to adapt your style for different people and situations

 

Behaviours

  • Ability to work as part of one Red Cross Team

  • Ability to manage own time and workload, and respond to and prioritise a range of competing demands
