About The Role

International Law Adviser
Location: UK Flexible
Salary: £38,475 - £45,100 Per Annum Based on 35 Hours Per Week
Contract: 3 Year Fixed Term

As the International Law Adviser, you will play a pivotal role in supporting and promoting our work on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other relevant legal frameworks. You will provide expert legal advice, conduct research, and deliver training to strengthen awareness and implementation of IHL within the organization and externally.

What does a day in the life of an International Law Advisor look like?
  • Advisory Role: Provide specialist legal advice on international humanitarian law, human rights, and related legal frameworks to support operational and advocacy teams.
  • Training and Awareness: Design and deliver IHL training programs for staff, volunteers, and partner organizations.
  • Policy Development: Support the development of policies, position papers, and tools to ensure compliance with IHL in humanitarian operations.
  • Research and Advocacy: Conduct legal research and contribute to policy debates on emerging IHL issues, advocating for its implementation and dissemination.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the British Red Cross in relevant networks, conferences, and legal forums both nationally and internationally.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the International Movement, government bodies, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to advance the understanding of IHL.
What does it take to be a International Law Advisor?
  • A qualified legal professional with a degree in Law and specialization or demonstrated experience in International Humanitarian Law.
  • Proven experience in providing legal advice and conducting legal research, particularly in humanitarian or international contexts.
  • Strong knowledge of the Geneva Conventions, Additional Protocols, and other IHL instruments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience delivering training to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to engage and influence stakeholders in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally, sometimes to challenging environments.
